Instructions Accessibility Best Practices Site Checklist The KU CMS The University of Kansas uses a content management system (CMS) to ensure a consistent user experience, rich content and easy access to the information KU site visitors are seeking. The KU Brand CMS brings a fresh look to existing KU CMS sites and adds two new home page options that feature a full-width "hero" photo. Updating to the brand is easy for a site administrator. Once you have completed the KU 2017 Brand request form , a web developer will make the Brand Preview button available. The Brand Preview button will then appear in the black tool bar, and you will be able to toggle the new look on (and off) to preview how your site will appear. Once you are ready to commit, you can apply the KU Brand using the Brand panel under Configuration. This will allow you to bring your site into alignment with KU's branding without extensive modifications or work Instructions Implementing the KU Brand is simple. Here's how: Submit the KU 2017 Brand request form Toggle on the Brand Preview Preview the pages of your site and make any needed adjustments Switch to the new brand Optionally, create a new home page using the new KU - homepage including full-width image content type Here is an Overview of the KU Homepage , Brand Update Instructions and KU Homepage Instructions . The KU Homepage including full-width image content type is comes with the 2017 KU Brand . There are two layout options available within the content type. Both feature a full-width hero photo and optional call-out text that sits on top of the photo. The layouts for both options are similar, but there are differences. Option 1: Features a Site Summary under the hero photo. It is pre-styled with Times at a large font size and the text length is limited. The style is not editable. The Site Summary could be a short statement about the purpose of your site, a reason why your program stands out, a brag point etc. Below the Site Summary are three column containers. You may choose to populate one, two, or all three columns. If you populate only the left column, it fills the full width. If you populate the left and middle columns, they both take half the width. If you populate all three columns, each take a third of the width. All blocks fall below the content. Option 2: Features a Top Content Area under the hero photo. It is not pre-styled, length is unlimited and its contents are open. Below the Top Content Area are two column containers and a sidebar for blocks. You may choose to populate one, or both columns. The sidebar is optional. If you populate only the left column and the sidebar, the column fills 3/4 the width. If you populate the left and middle column but don't use the sidebar, each column takes half the width. If you populate all three columns, the sidebar is the width of the block and the other two columns divide the remaining space. If you populate the sidebar with custom blocks, the required blocks fall below the columns. If you don't use the sidebar all blocks fall below the content. -- The CMS enables those without technical knowledge of HTML and CSS coding to easily build and maintain websites. The CMS is also robust enough to allow experienced web developers to incorporate customized features, but is simple enough for novice users to quickly begin managing a site. Our CMS uses Drupal, a highly regarded website development tool, and includes several roles: contributor, editor, and site administrator. Using the CMS, KU faculty and staff can easily add and edit content to pages, add or delete pages, and add images, photos and videos. Some of the features; of the CMS: Template — A common web template provides consistent branding across all KU websites, while giving units flexibility in tailoring their information and site to the needs of their audience. Responsive design — Pages in the CMS are viewable on any device, scaling or reformatting for smart phones, tablets, and computers. Workflow — Multiple roles and an approval process for edited content allows site managers to distribute the work of keeping the content updated. WYSIWYG editor — A Microsoft-Word style of interface for easily adding content without the need for technical skills. Versioning — Versions are saved of every published draft including an audit log, allowing content managers to revert to previous versions if needed. Scheduled publishing — Content can be set to automatically publish (go live) or unpublish (sunset) at a given date and time. Web forms — The easy creation of web-based forms with multiple output options for gathering user input. KU central authentication — Once you are assigned permissions by a site administrator, you can log in with your KU Online ID and password to manage your website and content. Syndicated content — Pull content from central KU sources, such as the Course Catalog and KU Calendar of Events. XML sitemap — Increases your site's searchability both externally and internally. URL redirects and aliasing — Allows for "clean" URLs for any webpage. -- CMS Help If you are experiencing a critical issue with your live website, please contact the IT Customer Service Center at 864-8080 or itcsc@ku.edu .
